COMING FALL, 1999...

Safe Haven: 1000 Refugees in Oswego, New York
A thirty-minute oral history documentary for the Safe Haven Museum. The production tells the story of the 1,000 Jewish, Yugoslavian and Italian refugees who, in 1944, were brought to Fort Ontario in Oswego, New York, the only World War II refugee camp in the United States. Using excerpts from six oral history interviews with the refugees, and an additional in-depth interview with journalist Ruth Gruber, who crossed the Atlantic with the refugees in 1944, the presentation will explain the background of the refugees' experience, the mission of the refugee camp, and the spirit and courage of those who were a part of this little known episode of WWII history.

COMING JANUARY, 2000...

still from SchoonersDown to the Sea in Ships: Gloucester and her Schooners
A one-hour documentary chronicling the rich history and tradition of Gloucester fishing schooners as an important chapter in American maritime history. With writer/historian Joseph E. Garland and educator/folk artist Daisy Nell, the presentation would tell the story of how the schooners were built, how they were used to develop a thriving fishing industry, the lives of the fishermen, their families and the communities they built. Partnering with both the Essex Shipbuilding Museum and the Gloucester Adventure, a 1926 Essex-built schooner that has been designated a National Historic Landmark, we will also bring the story up to present day, highlighting the current renaissance of the schooners, including preservation and restoration efforts, newly built replicas and the annual Gloucester Schooner Fest.
